(In Europe, the figure is twenty-two per cent.) Although seven out of ten American women who get abortions identify as Christian, the fight to make the procedure illegal is an almost entirely Christian phenomenon. By the time I went to college, I understood that I was pro-choice.Īmerica is, in many ways, a deeply religious country-the only wealthy Western democracy in which more than half of the population claims to pray every day. It was these last tenets, prosperity-gospel principles that neatly erase the material causes of suffering in our history and our social policies-not only regarding abortion but so much else-which toppled for me first. There was suffering built into this framework, but suffering was noble justice would prevail, in the end, because God always provided for the faithful. Men were sinful, and the goodness of women was the essential bulwark against the corruption of the world. The moral universe was a stark battle of virtue and depravity, in which the only meaningful question about any possible action was whether or not it would be sanctioned in the eyes of God. I had always thought of abortion as it had been taught to me in school: it was a sin that irresponsible women committed to cover up another sin, having sex in a non-Christian manner. But that’s so strange-she has a right to kill what would one day be her child? That issue is irresolved in my mind and it will eat at me until I sort it out.” But I still have that thought that if a woman was raped, she has her right. “I didn’t feel like a Christian when I was on that side of the room. “I felt guilty and guilty and guilty,” I wrote in my journal. My classmates said I needed to go to the other side, and I did. Then I raised my hand and, according to my journal, said, “I think it is always morally wrong and absolutely murder, but if a woman is raped, I respect her right to get an abortion.” Also, I said, if a woman knew the child would face a terrible life, the child might be better off. We all walked to the wall that meant “agree.” “Abortion is always wrong,” he offered, and there was no disagreement. He presented us with moral propositions, and we stood up and physically chose sides. Twenty years ago, when I was thirteen, I wrote an entry in my journal about abortion, which began, “I have this huge thing weighing on me.” That morning, in Bible class, which I’d attended every day since the first grade at an evangelical school, in Houston, my teacher had led us in an exercise called Agree/Disagree. As such it cautions that some smaller features available in Picasa 3 for Windows are not yet ready for the Mac, such as geotagging and third-party printing. Google shut down all Picasa online features such as export to the cloud, online backup and sync. The software requires Mac OSX 10.4 or above and as Google says, it's very much a beta and initially being released as a Google Labs product. Yes, it’s still available for Windows 10 and Mac, if you find an offline installer of Picasa 3. In the Google Photo blog announcing the new ware, Google says Picasa for the Mac also "plays nicely" with iPhoto for the Mac: Picasa takes a special read-only approach to editing photos stored in the iPhoto library, duplicating files as needed, so your iPhoto library isn't ever affected when you use Picasa. It will enable synching of photos between the desktop and online, so that edits made to desktop photos will automatically be synchronized with those online. People familiar with the matter say the search. Google says the new Picasa for Mac will have the same features as its current Windows version, Picasa 3. Long the domain of Linux and Windows users, Google's Picasa photo management tool is currently being tested for Macs, AppleInsider has learned. While Mac users in the past could use either an iPhoto plug-in or stand-alone upload tool to get their photos into Picasa, this is the first time they can use the actual Picasa software native on their Macs. Google announced that a beta version of its online photo-editing and sharing software, Picasa, is finally available for Mac OSX and is making its debut at this week's Macworld show. The show-stopper, though, is the introduction of full reflections across many surfaces in the environment, well demonstrated by the huge glass windows of the house in the opening level which provide a fully animated reflection of the world outside, 47 included, as well as a view on the interior. Advanced lens flares add additional vibrance to Hitman 2's look. Picture-in-picture is a neat new feature that shows security camera footage and other useful perspectives on the scene. There's now thick foliage too, which is nicely animated and shaded as well as providing Agent 47 with cover for the first time. Returning from the previous game is extensive use of parallax occlusion maps, which add a lot of depth to surface textures - especially noticeable on the sand in the game's opening scene. There's a lot to discuss, but a couple of features are particularly worth highlighting here. In the video below, I walk through a couple of levels to give a detailed breakdown of Hitman 2's tech - and detail is an appropriate word to use, as this game boasts huge areas packed with intricate detail and dynamic elements. IO has spent years perfecting its engine technology to support this type of game and a few of the new features introduced in Hitman 2 are quite eye-catching. Hitman 2, released last week, is a continuation of the work IO started on the 2016 game, with six new environments and new gameplay features and options.įrom our perspective, however, the most exciting improvements stem from changes made to IO Interactive's in-house Glacier 2 engine. That game has been widely recognised for its remarkably complex, systematic world, engaging design and highly replayable missions - it's a remarkable achievement. 18 years after the release of the original Hitman: Codename 47, the series lives on - yet it was arguably only with the release of the 2016 game that Danish studio IO Interactive perfected the formula. Many researchers have looked closely at what skills lead to dominating at board games, logic puzzles (like Sudoku), or these types of AMC problems. Do you want to check if you got the right answer? If you can't get the installer, copy the whole folder that contains the program in your Program Files folder in Windows. Start by downloading or copying your Windows app's installer to your Mac. I still use an older version of UltraEdit, but the same basic steps apply to any Windows app that runs in a Wineskin. I'll walk you through the process of wrapping a Windows app in Wineskin, using the example of UltraEdit from IDM Software, which is by far my favorite Windows text editor. Note that you don't need Wineskin Winery to use Wine under OS X, but Wineskin Winery lets you avoid all the expert-level configuration that you would need with Wine alone. If you're on a budget, you might also try Oracle's Free VM VirtualBox (Visit Site at Oracle) (Opens in a new window), or the security-minded and reasonably inexpensive Veertu (Visit Site at Oracle) (Opens in a new window), but the latter two options will require more work and run more slowly than the former two. Wine and Wineskin Winery are both brilliantly written apps, but they can't run large-scale Windows apps such as Microsoft Office-you'll need Parallels or Fusion for that-and you'll have to be prepared to put in some effort to get your apps working. (Opens in a new window) Read Our Microsoft Windows 10 Review Fortunately, Wineskin Winery makes the process relatively painless. The only guaranteed way to find out if your app will run under Wine is to try it out. It's still a work in progress, and it has the fewest problems with apps that run under older Windows versions like Windows XP. I've done it, but it takes a lot of effort.Īt the heart of Wineskin is Wine, a long-term, actively developed open-source project that creates non-Microsoft software for running Windows applications on Linux or the Mac. One disadvantage is that you won't be able to print from your Windows app as you can from Parallels or Fusion-though really determined Mac users can figure out ways to save printer output from a Wineskin wrapper to a file on OS X and then send that output to a printer. One advantage of Wineskin Winery is that it creates fully self-contained packages that you can share with other Mac users. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. I've also used it to wrap a Windows-based card-playing app for use on the Mac, so that a friend could continue to play her favorite game after switching platforms. For example, I use Wineskin to run my ancient Instant Recall contacts app. Judging from the posts in the Wineskin support forum, most users use the software for playing Windows-only video games, but it's equally useful if you have old Windows apps that you want to keep using even on a Mac. Just wrap it up in Wineskin Winery and launch it in the same way you would launch any other app on your Mac. If the Windows app that you want to use in OS X is simple and straightforward-for example, a text editor, small-scale database, or other special-purpose app-you may not need to spend money and time setting up a full-scale virtualization app like Parallels Desktop 11 (Visit Site at Oracle) (Opens in a new window) or VMware Fusion 8 (Visit Site at Oracle) (Opens in a new window). Based on the free Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) software, Wineskin Winery automates the process of wrapping up a Windows app so that it runs more or less like an OS X app. Wineskin Winery is a free, open-source tool for running uncomplicated Windows apps in a window under OS X. Fallow, pied, and marbled Parrotlets are among the most expensive mutations, beginning at $300 and going up to $600 for pristine varieties. Of course, the more complicated or rare the mutation, the more that you can expect to pay. On average, a standard green or blue Parrotlet can go for as little as $100 because they are fairly common. DNA testing is the only way to be 100% sure in these cases. Of course, different mutations can often make sexing a little more tricky, and mutations like marbled, albino, or pied need more specific observations from experienced breeders. With most Parrotlet colors, determining sex is fairly easy: Males will always have blue coloring on their rump, above their eyes, and on their wings, whereas females will always be a solid color. In green birds, the pied feathers will be yellow, in yellow birds, the pied feathers will be white, and in turquoise birds, they can be both white and yellow, but they will almost always have green foreheads. Pied Parrotlets can occur in any of the four main colors, but they are exceedingly difficult to reproduce, and the gene responsible for the colors is unpredictable. Like blue varieties, their wings and tails are often darker grey in color, but they typically have lighter masks and undersides. They often have a slight green or turquoise tinge to their plumage too, but with no obvious blues at all. The young cock is colouring up quite interesting-strong yellow all down the front, red rump, softer light yellow on wings and back, silvery yellow head with a slight green tinge above beak and a cinnamon looking tail.Young lutino cocks ive seen are all a deep yellow and hens light yellow. This Australian Birdkeeper book contains chapters on grass parakeet management, housing, recordkeeing, surgical sexing, diseases, hospital cages and brooders, handrearing, genetic tables, and over 160 photos of new mutations. Grey Parrotlets are technically blue series birds, and most have a steel blue coloring that appears as grey. A Guide to Neophema & Psephotus Grass Parrots: Their Mutations, Care & Breeding (Revised Edition) by Toby Martin. Grey Image Credit: Gabrielle Trouton, Shutterstock Because Red-rumped Parrots spend quite a great deal of time feeding on the ground, they are at risk from fungal infections and intestinal worms. This is easily remedied by removing the majority of oily seeds (such as safflower and sunflower) from their diet. Parrotlets without any genetic mutations, known as “true greens,” are rare and difficult to find, and they need genetic testing to verify their genetics.ĩ. Red-rumped parrots have a tendency to become overweight when kept in small aviaries. They can have various shades of green, from deep, dark green to lighter, yellow-tinged coloring. Green is the most common Parrotlet coloring, often referred to as the “wild-type” variation. Green Image Credit: Chelsea Sampson, Shutterstock I have a baby Red Rumped parakeet/parrot who I love dearly, but everyone who I show pictures of him to is saying hes 'kinda ugly' or 'the ugly duckling'. The fallow mutation results in red eyes and gives the bird a washed-out, pastel coloration that is often described as “dusty,” with the bird appearing to have been lightly dusted with a darker color than the base.Ĩ. However, it is most commonly found in green or yellow birds. For further information contact Alisha Sherriff.A post shared by ParrotLife fallow mutation can occur with any color Parrotlet. Garden Life is produced by Dunedin Botanic Garden. If properly cared for, these birds will live from 15 to 32 years. The birds at Dunedin Botanic Garden aviary have a few colour mutations which makes for a nice display. They form strong social bonds and within the flock drama will often occur, but is resolved quickly. Red-rumped parrots do well in aviaries and cages, but don’t like to be in crowded spaces. They spend a great deal of time feeding on the ground, and often call to one another with an attractive chee chillip chee chillip. Their green plumage provides great camouflage and when in ankle-high grasses they can remain unseen until the viewer is only a short distance away. They nest in the hollows of trees’ old stumps, even fence posts. In the wild in Australia, red-rumped parrots live in pairs or flocks in open country with access to water. The defining red rump is only on the male. Females are much less vibrant, with pale olive underparts, dull green wings and back and blue-black wingtips. Males are a bright emerald-green colour with yellow underparts, a brick-red rump and blue highlights on the wings and upper back. Red-rumped parrots are slim, moderate-size parrots approximately 28cm in length. Like the common name, the species name refers to the red rump. PHOTO: LINDA ROBERTSONThe red-rumped parrot was given the name Platycercus haematonotus by John Gould in 1838 who described the species from a specimen collected in New South Wales. Against $300+ carbon bars, the FSAs’ roughly $95 price tag makes them look like a bargain. While they can’t offer the vibration damping potential of a carbon bar, the invention popularization of wider rims, 25c tires, and more comfort-oriented frames makes this much less of an issue than it was even five years ago. Given their width, the bar’s graphics disappear under the tape, but that’s a minor complaint. The 31.8mm clamping section is a nice, accessory-friendly 120mm wide, and transitions comfortably to a semi-flat top. Despite coming in the bar’s widest width (44cm), our sample weighed in at 274g: 5g more than claimed for the 42 and within 40g of the brand’s $350 SL-K carbon bar. The real attraction here, however, is the Energy bar. While it may not be an obvious upgrade, the $100 Energy a no-brainer and should be considered before splashing out on bigger-name alternatives. Despite a weight that would put most carbon stems to shame, the Energy is most impressive for its stiffness- it is noticeably stiffer than the OEM Ibis stem it replaced. The matte/polished graphics are handsome- though a more neutral color option might be nice for some of the brighter bikes now available. 3D forged out of 2014 aluminum, the stem should be stronger than a similar-weight machined model (and kinder on the knees). Complete with titanium hardware, our 100mm Energy stem hit the scales at an impressive 113g. |
